As a memorial for my 1-year crochet anniversary, I'd like to reflect on how far I've come by the Lord's grace, and introduce to you how this journey even embarked upon its first steps.
Sitting right across from my friend, something yellow and blue caught my eye—a plastic, crinkly package with a bright and cute penguin printed onto it. I had definitely seen it before, on a YouTube ad!
I asked her what it was for, assuming that she was perhaps interested in learning how to crochet. To my surprise, she gave it to me as a gift. I was overjoyed! Crochet was something I had wanted to try before, but from afar, it looked intimidating—almost as if it were staring me down with vicious intent. I only needed this little nudge to try it out.
I started on the Woobles kit immediately. Video by video, stitch by stitch, within just a short four days, the penguin was completed—perfect, even with the extra little floppy feet I made using my newfound skill!
After getting my hands on new yarn and a metallic blue hook, I got to work. I started making cute bags, more plushies, and used this art to my advantage. When it came to birthday gifts, I could just whip up something adorable in a few hours. No more stress surfing through the Amazon gift section last-minute, only to find things that were too old, too young, or just too useless for my loved ones.
Of course, while it still comes with much time, money, and the occasional frustrating knot, it never fails to please and touch those who receive such a delicate, handmade piece.
Something special about crochet is that it has the potential to encourage people you know—and remind them that they matter.
